Trusted Revenue Cycle Management in Minnesota: The Six-Month Filing Law and 30-Day Payment Rule

Minnesota Statutes § 62Q.75 gives providers one of the tighter commercial filing windows in the country. Unless a contract says otherwise, charges must reach the health plan or third-party administrator within six months of the date of service. Miss it, and the provider can't be reimbursed and can't collect the charge from the patient either. A documented operational disruption can extend it to 12 months.

The same law requires plans and third-party administrators to pay or deny clean claims within 30 calendar days. Late clean claims earn interest at 1.5% per month, itemized separately on the payment. Because the law reaches third-party administrators, it covers many self-funded employer plans that other states' prompt pay laws exclude. Minnesota also requires every claim to be sent electronically in the state's uniform companion guide formats under § 62J.536.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

What Makes Our Minnesota
Revenue Cycle Management Different

How our RCM work fits Minnesota's rules.

Single-Team Ownership

One team carries each claim from eligibility check to final payment. Nothing sits between a scheduling vendor, a coding service, and a collections agency, so no Minnesota claim quietly runs out its six-month clock.

Six-Month Deadline Tracking

Every commercial claim is logged against the six-month filing limit in § 62Q.75, along with any shorter contract terms. Claims nearing the cutoff are flagged early so they go out before the window closes.

Blue Cross Minnesota Expertise

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and its affiliate Blue Plus carry a large share of commercial volume. Our billers apply their medical policies, prior authorization rules, and claim edits every day.

Interest and Recoupment Checks

We confirm late clean claims include the 1.5% monthly interest Minnesota requires. We also challenge recoupments outside the 12-month adjustment deadline, except for the coordination of benefits and other exceptions the law allows.

Monthly Performance Reports

Your monthly report covers collections, days in A/R, denial rates by payer, and aging buckets, with notes on which Minnesota payers are slowing payment and the fixes we have underway.

Coders for 47 Specialties

Teams are organized across all 47 specialties we support. A Rochester neurology group and a Minneapolis family practice each get coders who know their code sets, modifiers, and payer edits.

Specialty Expertise That Works for You

Mediknocx supports all 47 specialties we serve, from family practice to cardiology, oncology, and radiology, with teams assigned by specialty.

COMPLIANCE YOU CAN COUNT ON

How Does Mediknocx Ensure Compliance
With Minnesota Medical Billing Regulations?

No Surprises Act and Minnesota balance billing law

We apply the federal No Surprises Act alongside § 62Q.556. Minnesota's version also bars balance billing when a participating provider sends a specimen to a nonparticipating lab or pathologist, a point practices often miss.

Minnesota timely filing law

Commercial claims go out well inside the six-month limit in § 62Q.75. MHCP fee-for-service claims must be billed correctly within 12 months of the date of service.

Minnesota billing transparency

Under § 62J.81, patients can ask for a free good-faith estimate of the allowed payment for a service. We help your front desk answer them.

Payer-specific guidelines

We follow Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota policies, the MHCP Provider Manual, the Minnesota Uniform Companion Guides, and each MHCP managed care organization's contract terms.
